journey towards wisdom

day 10

Don’t bad-mouth your leaders, not even under your breath,
And don’t abuse your betters, even in the privacy of your home.
Loose talk has a way of getting picked up and spread around.
Little birds drop the crumbs of your gossip far and wide.
Ecclesiastes 10:20

When we are mad at someone or they have hurt our feelings in some way, it sure is fun to tell others how mean they are or what wrong we have suffered at their hands. Then everyone can join in and say how they don’t like that person and we somehow feel justified and validated and better. It is also extremely fun to talk about our mean boss and all the things he or she does to irritate you. Have we ever been a boss? Do we even know what kind of stress comes with that kind of resposnsibility? How easy it is to tear someone apart, especially in the privacy of our own home. But these words have a way of making their way around and soon enough our character comes into question because we have been gossiping. Now we are the ones who have done something wrong. It is like a vicious cycle, is it not? Let’s be careful what we say in the name of “venting” and “problem solving” and make sure that it is not camouflaged gossip. Feeling better momentarily while tearing someone down is a slippery slope and leads only down.
